As we are getting closer to finishing the semester, grades will be flooding in. This is a stressful time period so it’s important to prepare yourself for this time. Here are the top tips to help you through receiving your results and how to maximise your results.
Feedback
This is something lecturers and supervisors will speak about paying attention to constantly, and there’s a reason. Sometimes feedback can be hard to process, especially after an intense semester. However, it is essential for essay development, and also highlights the points that were great about your essay! Aim to book meetings with those giving you feedback to get a better understanding of your next targets. This feedback could be utilised by adding the missing parts to an essay or simply adding the feedback to your notes.
Don’t be too hard on yourself
Some grades are going to be very impressive and reflect the hard work put into the essay or exam. But not every grade is going to be top of the class. Some lower grades may make you question your ability, but even the best lawyers do not know everything. The feedback will be essential to understand in these cases where you may not have done as well. Let the feeling fuel your next exam or essay and apply all you have learnt.
Celebrate the wins
The grades you are proud of, celebrate. This creates positive reinforcement in our behaviour and tricks our brains into wanting this feeling more often. Even the small wins are a stepping stone to success. This could be through a range of avenues: buying yourself that item you’ve wanted, treating yourself to a coffee or even just binge watching your favourite show guilt free. Celebrate all of the hard work!
Try not to compare
Comparing to your course mates can be easy, in discussing how the essay or exam went and what answers you put for each section or even how easy you found the work. However, when receiving your results, it’s important to not put a comparison on your grade. Everyone’s circumstances are different, some areas of law you will be outstanding in whilst other areas may be weaker. This will be the same for your friends and course mates.
Results are in
Once your results are in and you have assessed your feedback, enjoy the time off! University semesters can be really intense and getting results for all of that hard work can be really stressful. It’s just as important to relax and recover from the semesters at university so when starting the next year, it’s done so with a fresh mind.
