Clear the Lobby: What laws are MPs voting on this week? – w/c 1st April

Welcome to our weekly feature courtesy of Sebastian Salek, the brains behind Clear the Lobby, working to bring you all the laws MPs are voting on this week, and explained in plain English!

MPs take another look at indicative votes on Monday. A customs union with the EU is thought to be the most likely preferred option. A referendum on any deal was also popular in last week’s votes, but neither option commanded a majority.

The government says the ‘ambition’ is still to get May’s deal through the Commons, despite another loss on Friday, but no date has been set for another vote. Remember the new Brexit cliff edge is now 12 April.

Banknote Diversity Bill
Requires the Bank of England to meet standards for representing ethnic minorities on banknotes. Ten minute rule motion presented by Helen Grant.

Mental Capacity (Amendment) Bill – consideration of Lords amendments
Applies to: England, Wales
Reforms the process for authorising care or treatment for people who can’t consent, where it involves a deprivation of their liberty. Started in the Lords.

Animals (Recognition of Sentience) Bill
Requires public bodies to recognise animals as sentient beings when considering their welfare needs. Ten minute rule motion presented by Kerry McCarthy.
