CMA approved the merger between Telefonica-owned O2 and Liberty Global-owned Virgin Media who planned to combine their UK assets last year. The main motivation for the merger was to combine customer bases, reaching 34m consumers, making the largest network in the UK. CMA thought this would not increase prices/reduce service quality. However, Sky and Vodafone objected and believed this was anti-competitive. This merger will now challenge leader BT who bought EE and is in a strong position.
How this affects firms?
Law aims to promote healthy competition. It bans anti- competitive agreements between firms such as agreements to fix prices or to carve up markets, and it makes it illegal for businesses to abuse a dominant market position. So, if Sky and Vodafone are correct, CMA may have to step in once again…
