Paralegal route

Paralegal work,
as a destination and a route.

Paralegal work is two things at once: a real career in its own right, and one of the most reliable ways into qualification now that the SQE counts paralegal experience as qualifying work. This explains how to use it for either, and how to make sure the experience actually counts.

The route, start to finish

How the route works

A paralegal is someone who does legal work without yet being a qualified solicitor or barrister. There is no single mandatory qualification to start, which is exactly why it is such an accessible entry point. The work ranges from document review and research to running aspects of real matters under supervision.

Since the SQE reforms, paralegal experience can be signed off as qualifying work experience (QWE) toward becoming a solicitor. That turns what used to be a holding pattern into a genuine route: you earn, you build experience, and that experience can count toward qualification.

  1. 1

    Get a paralegal role

Firms, in-house teams, and legal clinics all hire paralegals. Academic requirements vary and are often more flexible than for training contracts; demonstrated capability and reliability count for a lot.

  2. 2

    Do real legal work

The value is in the breadth and responsibility. The best paralegal roles give you genuine client and matter exposure, not just administrative support.

  3. 3

Have it count (if you want to qualify)

A solicitor can sign off your work as QWE. If qualifying is the goal, keep a clear record from day one and confirm early that the role can be signed off.

What this route is really like

The honest version

Paralegal pay and quality vary widely, from genuinely developmental roles to ones that are mostly process work with little progression. The title alone tells you little; the specific role and supervision tell you everything. Ask what work you will actually do and who will sign it off.

It is also a legitimate long-term career, not only a stepping stone. Plenty of people build expert, well-paid paralegal careers and never set out to qualify as a solicitor. Both choices are valid; the route just makes it easier to keep the door open.
