Managing stress during exams is a critical skill for law students. This article will explore effective strategies for maintaining mental health and well-being during exam season.

As a second-year law student, I learned a hard lesson about exam preparation. In the spirit of experimentation, I attempted to pull an all-nighter because everyone else was doing it. The result? I was exhausted, my mind was foggy, and I couldn’t recall most of what I had read. From that moment, I realised the importance of doing what works best for me, rather than following the crowd.

Managing Exam Stress
One of the most effective strategies I’ve adopted is the Japanese Pomodoro technique. I study for 25 minutes, take a five minute break, and repeat. During breaks, I sometimes do push-ups to stay energised. This method keeps me focused and prevents burnout, especially when studying late at night.

Early preparation is another key component. I start studying weeks or even months before exams, using a plan for spaced repetition. This involves reading a topic today and revising it three days later, then five days after that, and so on. This method helps reinforce my knowledge and reduces the stress from last-minute cramming.
Adequate sleep is crucial. I ensure I get enough rest and cut down on my screen time on social media to avoid distractions. Sleep helps me stay sharp and focused during exams, which is far more beneficial than staying up all night.
Support systems play a significant role in stress management. I make sure I talk to people with positive energy like my funny friends to lighten my mood. Watching videos of successful lawyers also motivates me, reminding me why I chose this path in the first place.

The Importance of Mindset
Maintaining a nonchalant attitude towards exam outcomes is essential. Stressing over results won’t change them, but a calm and collected mindset will help you perform better. Remember, “We suffer more often in imagination than in reality.” – Seneca.
Adopting this mindset helps me stay relaxed and confident, knowing that I’ve done my part. As Lou Holtz said, “It is not the load that breaks you down, it’s the way you carry it.”
