SAHM plays a vital role in the ongoing quest for diversity and inclusion. By dedicating an entire month to celebrating the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of South Asian communities, we not only honour their rich experiences but also shine a spotlight on their voices in the wider conversation on inclusivity. This special time gives us a chance to appreciate how South Asian heritage adds to our collective identity, while also helping us understand the challenges and successes faced by South Asian individuals.

As a South Asian myself, seeing a month dedicated to our heritage fills me with a sense of pride and belonging. As a law student, I recognise that celebrating SAHM is equally as important in the legal world as well as wider society.
In the legal sphere, SAHM holds profound significance, echoing a wider evolution in how we approach discussions on race and ethnicity. It is incredibly important for the legal profession to re-examine the language and practices to better reflect its diverse practitioners. For instance, the Race and Ethnic Disparities’ 2021 report declared the term “BAME” outdated UK government’s Commission on , prompting law firms to embrace more inclusive language that honours the diverse backgrounds of their minority ethnic staff.
Impact on diversity and inclusion
There are several different ways SAHM has the power to influence diversity and inclusion in law. For example, by shining a spotlight on the diverse experiences and perspectives within South Asian communities, SAHM promotes cultural appreciation and understanding, fostering a more inclusive environment where all voices are valued. In the legal field specifically, SAHM plays a crucial role in reshaping how we approach discussions on race and ethnicity.
