November 23, 2016Advocacy: What to do to Improve it
November 25, 2016On Monday, in partnership with Herbert Smith Freehills and CRCC Asia, we held a Facebook Live Event on Practising Law as a Global Citizen. Our speakers discussed the benefits of international experience and cross cultural understanding for aspiring lawyers.
A bit about our speakers…
Emma is currently a Junior Associate at Herbert Smith Freehills, specialising in Financial Regulation Services. As part of her training contract she did a six month secondment to Singapore with Herbert Smith Freehills.
Ed is a one of the co-founders of CRCC Asia, one of the largest internship providers in China enabling students to study and intern abroad on award winning programs.
April was an editor for The Student Lawyer whilst interning in Shanghai with CRCC Asia. Her legal experience includes working in Australia, China and now as a paralegal in a top ten firm here in London.
Why is this relevant to you?
Now a days firms do not want the cookie cutter standard for a lawyer, they want a variety of people that together can bring different skills and perspectives to legal situations. Undertaking a Gap year or having legal experience (or in fact any work experience) abroad may give you the edge on the application process if you can apply it correctly. What can you expect?
The topics discussed here cover a variety of issues. Our speakers were able to talk about
- Building inter-personal relationships. Forming and maintaining these can be challenging, it is easy for us to bury our heads in work and just get on with it. Our panel explains the advantages and how to be successful.
“More about the relationships you have with your clients and colleagues”
- Building cross-cultural understanding. Our speakers shared anecdotes on their experiences including the pitfalls that they experienced. They went on to talk about why it is so incredibly important to be aware of cultural events and mannerisms and how to use that to your advantage.
“Small things make the biggest difference”
- The practical challenges you may face. It may be difficult at first to seamlessly blend in different parts of the world. Our speakers provide tips and advice on how to combat that.
“Don’t get trapped into thinking that London is the centre of the legal world”
- The effect of Brexit on Global Business. This has been a hot topic in the news, but have you thought about the international impact?
“The extent of the challenge is not yet fully understood. I think we not talking in terms of months, I think years”
