May 31, 2023The G7 Summit 2023
June 1, 2023In this interview, we speak with an experienced solicitor with over 13 years of experience in the legal field, who specialises in corporate law and has worked at prestigious law firms throughout her career.
Can you tell us about your journey in the legal profession and what motivated you to pursue a career in law?
Certainly! My journey in the legal profession began with a deep passion for justice and a desire to help people navigate complex legal matters. I was always fascinated by the intricacies of the law and how it shapes our society. This drove me to pursue a law degree, and upon graduation, I joined a reputable law firm where I had the opportunity to work on diverse cases and learn from experienced mentors.
What challenges did you face during the early stages of your career, and how did you overcome them?
Like many young lawyers, I faced my fair share of challenges. One significant hurdle was gaining practical experience and building a strong professional network. It’s important to realise that the legal field can be highly competitive, and breaking into the industry requires persistence and resilience. I sought opportunities to gain hands-on experience through internships, pro bono work, and networking events. These experiences not only enhanced my legal skills but also helped me forge valuable connections within the legal community.
How do you maintain a work-life balance in a demanding profession like law?
Achieving work-life balance is indeed a challenge in the legal profession, given the demanding nature of the work. It’s crucial to set boundaries and prioritise self-care. I learned early on that taking care of my physical and mental well-being is essential to perform at my best professionally. This means making time for hobbies, exercise, and spending quality time with loved ones. It’s about finding what works for you and committing to it, even in the midst of a demanding workload.
What advice do you have for law students who are trying to decide on a specific area of law to specialize in?
Choosing a specialisation can feel overwhelming, especially when there are so many fascinating areas of law to explore. My advice would be to gain exposure to different practice areas through internships, clinics, or shadowing experienced solicitors. Take the time to reflect on what aspects of the law resonate with you the most. It’s important to find an area that aligns with your interests, values, and long-term career goals. Don’t rush the decision; allow yourself to explore and learn before committing to a specialisation.
How do you stay updated with the latest legal developments, and how important is continuous learning in the legal profession?
Continuous learning is absolutely crucial in the legal profession. Laws and regulations are constantly evolving, and staying updated is essential to provide the best possible advice to clients. I make it a priority to attend legal seminars, conferences, and workshops to stay abreast of the latest developments. Additionally, I engage in reading legal publications and participating in professional associations and online forums. Embracing lifelong learning ensures that we adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing legal landscape.
Finally, what advice would you give to aspiring lawyers who are just starting their legal careers?
My advice to aspiring lawyers would be to cultivate a strong work ethic, remain curious, and never stop learning. Seek mentors who can guide and inspire you along the way. Be proactive in seeking out opportunities, whether it’s through internships, pro bono work, or joining legal organisations. Finally, remember to maintain your passion regardless of the challenges you face.
