Journey into Law
Rachel’s introduction to the legal profession began in 2018 through internships at Laven Partners and 4 New Square Chambers. Shadowing a barrister at 4 New Square offered insight into case management and courtroom advocacy, revealing the complexities of litigation. Her internship at Laven Partners, a financial compliance specialist firm, was the defining moment. Working closely with corporate legal professionals demonstrated the dynamic nature of corporate law and the importance of legal expertise in business transactions, regulatory compliance and risk management.
Seeing the contrast between advocacy and corporate legal work helped Rachel identify her passion for the corporate field. This led her to pursue a Business Law degree and now an LLM in Corporate Law at UCL.
Accelerated Schooling and Starting University at 15
Beginning university at 15 was both challenging and rewarding. Accelerated schooling required exceptional time management and adaptability, as Rachel navigated university life while still a teenager. It taught her self‑discipline, independence and a strong work ethic, qualities that have shaped her academic and professional development.
She often had to prove herself in an environment where her peers were older and more experienced. These experiences helped her develop resilience and adaptability, which continue to support her as she pursues her goals.
Completing a Degree by 18
One of Rachel’s biggest challenges was balancing academic rigour with personal growth. She aimed to excel academically without missing out on extracurricular activities, networking opportunities and the broader university experience. Managing high expectations at a younger age required a strong support system and effective time management.
Rather than emphasising her age, she focused on demonstrating maturity and commitment to her studies. Studying law is demanding, and she learned the importance of self‑care, taking breaks and seeking support when needed. Her journey highlights the value of resilience and balance in pursuing academic and career goals.
Aspiration to Become a Solicitor
Rachel’s decision to pursue a career as a solicitor evolved through academic experiences and internships. During law school, she developed a strong interest in corporate and business‑related law, which led her to pursue an LLM in Corporate Law at UCL. She is particularly drawn to corporate law because of its dynamic nature and the opportunity to work closely with businesses on complex transactions, mergers and acquisitions and regulatory compliance.
She is also attracted to the fast‑paced environment of major city firms such as Clifford Chance or Latham & Watkins. These firms handle high‑stakes matters and offer exceptional growth opportunities. She aspires to specialise in corporate law at a major city firm where she can contribute to business success and take part in cutting‑edge legal work.
Goals for the LLM in Corporate Law at UCL
Rachel’s primary goal is to deepen her understanding of corporate law, particularly in areas such as cross‑border mergers and acquisitions, international finance and corporate governance. She hopes to excel academically and engage meaningfully with peers and professors.
UCL’s reputation for academic excellence makes this experience even more exciting. She plans to take full advantage of the faculty, resources and firm‑sponsored events. Networking in London’s global financial hub is also a priority, and she aims to build strong professional connections that will support her future career.
Experience as a Student Legal Advisor
Rachel’s experience as a Student Legal Advisor allowed her to apply legal knowledge in real‑world situations and develop skills in client communication, legal research and case management. She learned the importance of tailoring advice to each client’s specific circumstances and ensuring that any law referenced is directly relevant to their case.
She encourages students to seek opportunities such as legal clinics or internships. Approaching each case with empathy, diligence, and a commitment to providing meaningful assistance is essential. These experiences not only strengthen legal skills but also offer a deep sense of fulfilment.
