Supporting Aspiring Lawyers in Sunderland: An Interview with Penny Jones, President of the University of Sunderland Student Law Society

Introducing myself

I am Penny, President of the University of Sunderland Student Law Society. I am currently in my second year studying for my LL.B. I have spent a lot of time exploring a career at the Bar and became a student member of the Honourable Society of Gray’s Inn in early 2020.

During my time at Sunderland, I have completed four mini‑pupillages with chambers across the UK and an internship with the Ministry of Justice, where I developed a strong interest in policymaking. I became President after serving as Vice‑President from September 2019 to April 2020, and I am excited to continue developing the society.

What sets our law society apart

Although our society is career‑focused, our strongest values centre on student wellbeing, support and diversity. This is what sets us apart. Throughout the academic year, senior members have actively supported students facing difficulties, ensuring the society remains a safe space to talk openly.

We also work closely with the Junior Lawyers Division North East, which provides our members with opportunities to engage in discussions about solicitor training and education.

The events we organise

We run a wide range of career and skills‑focused events. In 2019, we helped organise a mock Health and Safety trial, where members acted as Defence Counsel, Justice of the Peace and Clerk. Students found the experience both educational and insightful.

We also hosted a Q&A with the City of Sunderland Law Society, giving members the chance to ask legal professionals about the profession and different educational pathways. Earlier this year, we attended an event hosted by the Honourable Society of Inner Temple, which was a fantastic opportunity for our members.

The social side

There is plenty to enjoy in Sunderland. Our society is based at St Peter’s Campus, next to the award‑winning National Glass Centre, where students can learn about Sunderland’s history of glassmaking and take part in workshops.

We are also close to Roker Beach and the River Wear, so there are beautiful walks nearby. During term time, we host regular quiz nights and meet‑ups in the city centre to enjoy Sunderland’s nightlife.

My top three tips for aspiring lawyers

University can be hectic and stressful, but it should also be enjoyable. My top three tips are:

Get involved. Never be afraid to jump into new activities or experiences. You will either learn something new or expand your professional network.

Ask for help. Everyone faces challenges. How you overcome them builds resilience and helps you grow.

Look after your wellbeing. I recommend visiting National Trust parks. It is easy to become consumed by student life and forget what you enjoy. Relaxation and exercise give you the best chance of success.
