Your Background and Journey into Law
I moved from Nigeria to the UK in 2020 to begin my undergraduate law degree. I was interested in how law regulates society and how it sits between government and people. I didn't initially see myself becoming a lawyer, but that changed after my first legal experience with Herbert Smith Freehills the summer after my first year. Meeting lawyers and understanding their work helped me see the profession more clearly. I later completed work experience at a firm in Nigeria, and this year I secured vacation schemes in London. I can now genuinely picture myself building a career in law.
Motivation Behind Your Website and Sharing Your Experiences
It often feels like there isn't enough free, accessible information to help students break into the profession. Law is already competitive, and additional barriers make it even harder. I wanted to share my experiences to help students access useful guidance without cost. I built my website on a whim, but I now love working on it and developing it consistently. People have shown interest, which means a lot to me. I also use LinkedIn, but my main focus is the website. It is a personal project, and I am excited to see how it grows.
Advice for Developing Commercial Awareness
Commercial awareness can be difficult to build. I know this because I founded the Commercial Awareness Society at my university, and my website also covers the topic. What has helped me most is consistency. It doesn't matter whether you read FT articles, listen to podcasts, or spend just 5 minutes a day learning something new. It feels unfamiliar at first, but once you stay consistent, it becomes enjoyable and easier to absorb.
Balancing Society Leadership with Your Studies
It is a lot of work, and sometimes it is challenging to balance everything. The biggest difference is having the right people around you. When you work with passionate and proactive team members, the workload becomes manageable and even enjoyable. In one of the societies I lead, the committee is incredibly proactive, and that makes everything easier.
Your Experience Completing Two Vacation Schemes
One thing I learned is that law firms are genuinely different. It is hard to understand that until you meet them. They all have their strengths, and it is interesting to see where you feel comfortable. I enjoyed meeting people and having conversations with lawyers I otherwise would never have met. I organised meetings with partners and associates who were willing to share their experiences. Everyone has a unique journey, and hearing their stories is inspiring.
People often describe law as repetitive and long hours, but I found the work enjoyable and exciting. I can picture myself doing it long term. These schemes showed me that you can have a fulfilling and dynamic career as a lawyer.
Advice for Students Undertaking Their First Vacation Scheme
The best advice I received was to be myself. At first, it sounded abstract, but it is true. Schemes are competitive and can feel intense, but firms want to see who you genuinely are. If you are constantly stressed, you may not show your best self.
Complete your work to the best standard you can. If you have a presentation, practise thoroughly. Balance assessed tasks with work from your supervisor and other lawyers. Volunteer for tasks across different practice areas to broaden your experience. Network with people whose roles interest you. Above all, be yourself and enjoy the experience.
What Surprised You Most During Your Schemes?
Definitely how approachable people are. Professionalism is important, but everyone is human and willing to talk. I talked about fashion with an employment partner and discussed movie plotlines with another lawyer. These moments showed me that being friendly and social matters just as much as being professional.
