Clear the Lobby: What laws are MPs voting on this week? – w/c 20th May

Welcome to our weekly feature courtesy of Sebastian Salek, the brains behind Clear the Lobby, working to bring you all the laws MPs are voting on this week, and explained in plain English!

Another light agenda this week as MPs hit the campaign trail for Thursday’s EU election. The Parliamentary Buildings (Restoration and Renewal) Bill is a step towards renovating the Palace of Westminster. The Victorian building is in dire need of repair, and MPs will vacate it while the works are being carried out.

 

MONDAY 20 MAY

NonDomestic Rating (Preparation For Digital ServicesBill – committee stage, report stage and 3rd reading
Applies to: England, Wales
Allows HMRC to begin designing and developing a digital service for collecting business rates (a tax on property used for business purposes). These are currently collected by local councils. This service would allow businesses to manage all their taxes in one place.

TUESDAY 14 MAY

Pregnancy and Maternity (Redundancy Protection) Bill
Bans making employees redundant during pregnancy, the six months afterwards, and maternity leave. Ten minute rule motion presented by Maria Miller.

Parliamentary Buildings (Restoration and Renewal) Bill – 2nd reading
Applies to: England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland
Creates statutory bodies to oversee the large-scale restoration work in Parliament that’s due to start in the mid-2020s.

Unauthorised Encampments Bill
Makes it illegal for travellers (or others) to demand money to leave an unauthorised camp site. Ten minute rule motion presented by Toby Perkins.
