Clear the Lobby: What laws are MPs voting on this week? – w/c 3rd Dec

Welcome to our weekly feature courtesy of Sebastian Salek, the brains behind Clear the Lobby, working to bring you all the laws MPs are voting on this week, and explained in plain English!

A few interesting bills this week, but they’ll be overshadowed by the Brexit debate – all 40 hours of it – which starts on Tuesday and culminates in the “meaningful vote” on 11 December.

Monday 3rd December

Crime (Overseas Production Orders) Bill – 2nd reading
Applies to: England (part), Wales (part), Scotland (part), Northern Ireland (part)
Allows law enforcement agencies to request data held by organisations outside the UK (e.g. an internet service provider) for use in criminal proceedings. Started in the Lords.

Tuesday 4th December

Planning (Appeals) Bill
Limits the right of appeal against planning decisions taken in accordance with guidelines set out by local authorities. Ten minute rule motion presented by John Howell.

Wednesday 5th December

Immigration (Time Limit on Deportations) Bill
Caps the maximum period of detention under the Immigration Act 1971 at 28 days. Ten minute rule motion presented by Tulip Siddiq.
