    Trainee Bios

Trainee Solicitor, Shanice McAnuff - Law Graduate from Warwick University

As a trainee, you come into a role like this thinking you won’t be given anything particularly important. But early on, when you see your work mentioned in media such as Bloomberg, you realise that what you’re doing really is high profile. When I was researching law firms, I’d read about Ashurst taking on lots of exciting work, but I never expected to be as involved as I have been. Even if you only have a minor role, just being able to say you were part of a project is incredibly rewarding.
You tend to work in smaller teams at Ashurst, which means you’re given much more responsibility. You’re expected to delve into the finer details and understand the complexity of clients’ issues. When you’re brought into projects that the firm has tackled many times before, you’re able to draw from your team’s broad expertise. But then, when you’re given a case that’s completely new to your colleagues, suddenly you’re faced with brand new facts, which make for brand new discussions. You work together to innovate and build fresh approaches from scratch – and you become part of the project from beginning to end.
What’s more, the fact that seniors give you exposure to prestigious clients reflects the amount of trust they have in your ability to communicate with them. This level of responsibility gives you a sense of empowerment and belief in yourself. It gives you the boost of confidence you need to progress.

Trainee Solicitor, Angus Rance - Arabic and Spanish Graduate from Leeds University

There is a great emphasis on early responsibility at the firm. Sometimes it’s nerve-racking to receive these tasks at such an early stage – but that kind of challenge is why you come to a place like Ashurst. It’s a huge part of your training, and colleagues are always happy to explain what’s going on. The support means you never feel like you’re thrown into the deep end. And it gives you the confidence to get more involved and play a real role in how projects are executed.
Every day is different at Ashurst. There’s no telling on a day-to-day basis what sort of task you’ll be given, so you are constantly learning and developing. The projects you get to work on are complex and have you operating at the forefront of the market, which brings a sense of satisfaction and achievement to everything you do.
Before I joined, I kept hearing how every law firm has its own unique culture. In Ashurst’s case, their culture is all about passion for knowledge, having fun, being open and helping one another. Right from the word go you feel like you’re part of the firm. I was expecting to find a competitive environment but there’s a great team atmosphere. It’s reassuring to know there are colleagues all over the firm – lawyers and non-lawyers alike – who are willing to help you better yourself.
