Clear the Lobby: What laws are MPs voting on this week? – w/c 8th October

Welcome to our weekly feature courtesy of Sebastian Salek, the brains behind Clear the Lobby, working to bring you all the laws MPs are voting on this week, and explained in plain English!

Parliament is back in action after party conference season. It’s a relatively quiet week in terms of laws, but there’s a big piece of Brexit legislation on the menu.

Tuesday 11 September

Assaults on Retail Workers (Offences) Act
Makes assaulting retail workers an aggravated offence, so sentences are tougher. Ten minute rule motion presented by Alex Norris.

Wednesday 12 September

Criminal Records (Childhood Offences) Act
Limits the childhood offences that must be disclosed later in life. Aims to ensure that minor offences do not blight people as adults, e.g. when applying for jobs. Ten minute rule motion presented by Theresa Villiers.

Agriculture Bill – 2nd reading and money resolution
Applies to: England (part), Wales (part), Scotland (part), Northern Ireland
Sets out the UK’s post-Brexit farm policy, providing a framework for leaving the Common Agricultural Policy and establishing a new system. This includes replacing direct subsidies with payments for “public goods”, like environmental protection, public access to the countryside and measures to reduce flooding.
