Stonewall has released a list of the top 100 employers for LGBT staff with 17 law firms making the list. Stonewall is an LGBT rights organisation, which compiles a yearly list of the top employees to create inclusive workplaces for LGBT staff. Pinsent Masons ranked second in the list overall, beaten out from the top spot by Lloyds Banking Group. Half of the top ten were law firms, with Clifford Chance, Baker & McKenzie, Berwin Leighton Paisner, and Norton Rose Fulbright all making the list. A number of other firms made the top 100, including Dentons, Hogan Lovells, Herbert Smith Freehills, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, CMS Cameron McKenna, DWF, K&L Gates, Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton, Travers Smith, Eversheds, Slaughter and May, and Reed Smith. Simmons & Simmons was also recognised as a ‘star performer’ for its “unwavering efforts to create inclusive workplaces where staff can bring their whole selves to work”.
Head of responsible business at Pinsent Masons, Kate Fergusson, said, “[i]n the last twelve months, we have increased our focus on gender identity, introducing gender identity monitoring and reporting, publishing new guidelines on transitioning at work and providing training and awareness raising sessions for our people”. She added that membership of LGBT and Allies networks at the firm had risen by 31 per cent over the past year. Stonewall’s legal industry export, Elliot Pentland, described the legal industry as “leading by example” and “demonstrating a true commitment to LGBT diversity and inclusion”. He continued, “it’s hugely exciting and encouraging to see so many firms taking the steps to ensure that their employees can be themselves in the workplace”.
