The US Election came to a shocking conclusion yesterday morning, with Donald Trump being elected as the 45th President. The result hit headlines across the globe in a stunning outcome, with the final result going against the earlier exit polls. In the space of a few hours, the outcome swung from 85 per cent for Hilary Clinton, to 95 per cent for Donald Trump. The exit polls again appear to have grossly underestimated the deep divisions between voters in the US.
Donald Trump, a real estate developer, with no previous government experience will now take office in late January. The result saw the culmination of nearly two years of campaigning. Early indicators of Trump’s likely success emerged as Trump won key swing states Ohio and Florida, both of which have voted for the elected President of the past 30 years. Despite Clinton’s share of the popular vote being slightly higher, the turnout for Trump was again massively underestimated. Trump was polarised early on by the Republican party, with numerous traditional Republican voters indicating that they would vote for Clinton, or independent parties disagreeing with Trump as their party nominee. Congratulations were offered by Russia President Vladimir Putin, suggesting a renewed relationship between Russia and the US. In his victory speech, Trump suggested he would be a President for all Americans, and called for unity.
