Six High Court Judges Promoted to Court of Appeal

Early this month, the Ministry of Justice announced the promotion of six High Court judges to the Court of Appeal. The judges promoted consist of Mr Justice Flaux, Mr Justice Henderson, Mr Justice Irwin, Mr Justice Moylan, Mr Justice Hickinbottom and one female judge, Mrs Justice Thirlwall, who has been on the Queen’s Bench Division since 2010.

The appointment of Lord and Lady Justices of the Court of Appeal are made by The Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister and the Lord Chancellor following the recommendation of an independent selection panel led by the Lord Chief Justice, which is a position currently held by Lord Thomas of Cwmgiedd. The Ministry of Justice stated,“The selection exercise was open to applicants that satisfied the judicial eligibility condition on a seven year basis or were Judges of the High Court.” The appointments are believed to have been made after the recent wave of retirements from the appellate bench, and the elevation of Sir Terence Etherton to Master of the Rolls.
