The largest firm by lawyer headcount has opened yet another office in Italy just months after opening in the country’s business and financial capital Milan. This time, Dentons set its sights on the Italian capital Rome, which is Italy’s second largest legal market after Milan. Dentons’ global chairman Joe Andrew said of this dynamic, “Although Rome is Italy’s largest city and second largest legal services market, many international law firms have reduced their presence in Rome, meaning companies cannot benefit from the same legal offering as in Milan”.
Italy has been a hotspot for firm activity in recent years, with firms both opening and closing their doors. Ashurst was the latest to call to a close its Milan operations after a strategic review at the beginning of the year. On the other hand, Fieldfisher recently launched in Milan with the hope of furthering its European outreach. Dentons’ headcount across its Italian offerings totals 50 lawyers, of which 12 are partners in practice areas including antitrust, corporate, employment, energy, litigation and arbitration, M&A and tax.
