International law firm Vinson & Elkins is set to close the doors of its Abu Dhabi location. The Houston based firm will relocate its lawyers, including partner Rob Patterson to its Dubai office by the end of March this year. The decision was concluded late last year by the firm’s management committee, leaving the firm with two Middle East locations, Dubai and Riyadh. Vinson & Elkins is one of the oldest US firms to have an office in London, having opened in 1971, the office specialises in energy transactions and projects, finance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity and tax.
Vinson & Elkins joins a growing number of firms retreating from their Abu Dhabi practices. Herbert Smith Freehills closed in the summer of last year, in a similar move to Vinson & Elkins, they relocated their lawyers to their Dubai office. Latham & Watkins merged its Abu Dhabi and Dubai offices while also closing in Doha. This signifies that firms and consolidating their United Arab Emirates’ offices into a single, strong location.
