The Pupillage Gateway might not be moving to January after the Bar Council, in a press statement made today (12th August 2015), announce that further consultation is required before the final decision is made. This U-turn comes after members of the Bar complained that these changes were sprung upon them. In the press release, the Bar Council stated:
“[It] wants to ensure the Gateway system is robust rather than rushed and is exploring the profession the practical implications of bring forward the opening date of the Gateway.”
Initially, the change was proposed so prospective barristers will know if they have secured pupilage before they apply for the BPTC and the substantial financial commitment which comes with it. However, no matter what the result of the deliberations, the further consultation is desirable, as the implications of moving the course will now be fully explored.
